１９０４年にドイツからアメリカに移住し、サンフランシスコやポートランドのニッティングカンパニーでニットの技術を学んだウィリアム・ピーター・ディーエンは、１９２０年、オレゴン州ポートランドで、”Ｄｅｈｅｎ　Ｋｎｉｔｔｉｎｇ　Ｍｉｌｌｓ”を立ち上げた。
創業当初より最高品質のニットを製造していたＤｅｈｅｎは、スクールニットやモーターサイクルニット、また、ヴァーシティ・ジャケット（スタジャン）やチアリーディングのユニフォームなどのカスタムメイドを、三世代に渡りファミリービジネスで行っている。
多くの会社が海外に生産拠点を移す中、創業から９０年以上が経つ現在も、ＭＡＤＥ　ＩＮ　ＵＳＡの品質にこだわり、全ての製品をポートランドの工場で製造している数少ない”レジェンドブランド”の一つである。
